Why does birth time need correcting? ▾

Solar time, not clock time. In BaZi the hour pillar, and the day pillar near midnight, follow where the Sun actually was. Clock time is set for a whole time zone, so at your birthplace the Sun may cross the meridian earlier or later than clock noon. We use the longitude of your birthplace to correct for that, and can also add the equation of time (from −14 min in February to +16 min in November).

Daylight saving time is taken from your browser’s time zone database for the birth date, so summer-time births are converted to standard time automatically.

Whichever basis you pick, the “Pillars under each time basis” panel shows every combination side by side. If they differ, choose the one closest to the time on your birth certificate.

Everything is calculated in your browser. Your details are never sent to a server; if “Remember” is on they are kept only in this browser’s storage. Privacy policy ·

About East & West at a glance

This page sets your Chinese BaZi chart (the Four Pillars of Destiny) beside your Western birth chart, both calculated for the same moment and place. On the Eastern side you see your four pillars, your Day Master and the balance of the five elements; on the Western side, your Sun, Moon and rising sign and the planets in their signs.

How the two charts are calculated

The BaZi side starts from the solar calendar: the year changes at the Beginning of Spring (around February 4) and each month at a solar term, so a birthday in late January belongs to the previous year’s animal sign. The Western side uses the tropical zodiac and, when you give a birth time, the horizon of your birthplace for the rising sign. Both use your birth time converted to local solar time.

Reading the comparison

The two systems describe different things — elements and seasons on one side, planets and signs on the other — so they are not expected to match point for point. Look for broad themes instead: a chart heavy in Fire next to a strong Leo or Aries emphasis, for example, is a pattern many readers notice.
